The starting point is thinking of the forest as an organism subject to self-regulation, not management. There are no mechanisms of central control or hierarchy, but rather networks of mutual dependencies, thresholds, proximity, and metabolic accountability. Each species plays a specific role in the fabric of the forest. Isolation and dormancy are protective mechanisms; every disturbance is metabolised through slow differentiation, not through the centralised imposition of required outcomes. The natural forest ecosystem continuously seeks balance, optimising losses and regulating excess according to annual cycles and its own timescale.
Forest Syntax asks: what can we learn from the forest in the process of rebuilding our human structures, bodies, and relationships?
The practice combines several traditions and languages at once. Field observation and documentation through film, sound, movement, writing, relational mapping. Work with the body and sensory practice through deep listening, breath, movement, physical presence - not only through data analysis. The language of ecological narrative: myth, legend, oral tradition, which for thousands of years has served as a tool for transmitting knowledge about the relationship between humans and nature. And the study of crisis moments as diagnostic windows through which we can see where human governance systems diverge from the logic of living systems.
Forest Syntax is also a language of communication between nature and culture. We learn to "speak" with the ecosystem through the body, through attentiveness, through a willingness to be changed by what we observe.
